Frequently Asked Questions

Wondering how it all works? You’re in the right place.

If you’ve never worked with a professional editor or proofreader before, it’s natural to have questions. Below are answers to some of the most common ones I hear. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out directly—I’m always happy to chat.

What’s the difference between proofreading, copy editing, line editing, and developmental editing?

Great question—these terms can be confusing! I’ve outlined each service in detail on the Services page, but here’s a quick summary:

  • Proofreading catches final typos and formatting issues after everything else is done.
  • Copy editing corrects grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency.
  • Line editing improves sentence structure, clarity, and flow.
  • Developmental editing focuses on big-picture structure and content, especially for manuscripts or longer projects.

If you’re not sure what level you need, I’m happy to review a sample and make a recommendation.

I work with a wide range of written materials, including:

  • Book manuscripts (fiction and nonfiction)
  • Blog posts and web content
  • Business and client-facing documents
  • Expert witness reports and academic writing
  • Marketing materials, course content, and more

If it’s written and you want it to sound polished and professional, I can likely help.

Yes—always. One of my top priorities is keeping your unique tone and intent intact. My edits are meant to support your message, not rewrite it. You can expect thoughtful, respectful suggestions that enhance your work while staying true to your voice.

Pricing depends on the type of editing, the length and complexity of the project, and your timeline. Once I understand your needs, I’ll provide a custom quote and clear expectations—no surprises. For some smaller projects, I may offer an hourly rate; for larger ones, I typically quote by the project.

Absolutely. If you or your organization use a specific style guide—such as Chicago, AP, MLA, or a custom in-house guide—I’m happy to follow it. I can also format your document to meet submission guidelines, style preferences, or publication standards.

What file formats do you work with?

I primarily work in Microsoft Word using Track Changes, so you can easily see all my edits and comments. I can also work with Google Docs, PDFs, or even physical pages when needed—just let me know what you prefer.

When possible, yes. If you have a tight deadline, let me know, and I’ll do my best to accommodate you. Rush projects may include an additional fee depending on the turnaround time.

Yes, I’m happy to provide a short sample edit (usually around 250–300 words) so you can get a feel for my editing style before committing to a full project.

Just send me a message with a few details about your project. I’ll respond with next steps, which may include reviewing a sample, providing a quote, or suggesting a brief discovery call if needed. There’s no pressure or obligation—just a friendly conversation to see if we’re a good fit.
